I went on base today to eat lunch with Mom and pick up a couple things at the BX. I was born into the military and the military has been a constant throughout my years. I have eaten countless lunches at the foodcourt and walked numerous loops around the commissary. I feel I am a pretty good authority on the goings-on at Dyess AFB. Some things I have noticed/decided over the years:
1. I have seen very (very very) few attractive wives. Maybe all the attractive wives shop at United or Wal-Mart, but I find that a little hard to believe.
2. There are very (very very) few attractive, non-cocky, eligible officers. I think all the good ones are swept up while they're still in college. If they make it to Dyess without a wedding ring, they're either weird, ugly, or super cocky.
3. There is a higher ratio of ugly women with decent men on Dyess AFB than in the civilian Abilene community. I look at those couples and wonder if that man really thinks that mediocre/ugly woman is the cat's meow or if his eyes/hands/body ever wanders.
4. Girls, if you've got a big butt and/or a propensity to be overweight, find yourself a military man. Apparently there is a large percentage of men in the military who prefer their women on the larger side. I think I will forever be perplexed by this.
5. The majority of enlisted families always seem to look dirty and disheveled. Why? I'm betting on poor money management and questionable backgrounds. Life in the military can be rather comfortable if a family is smart. There are so many families who spend all their money on cigarettes, fast food, credit cards, and cars that their kids end up wearing threadbare and stained t-shirts with shoes that are too small and pants that are too short. Get it together people.
6. Lastly, everything (and I mean everything) in the military is always "a little bit off". 50% of the employees on base speak English as a second language. Microphones always screech or crackle. Trash cans are always full. Shelves aren't always full. Nothing is ever efficient.
In other news, my new obsession is Gossip Girl. I had heard about it and I knew it was on the CW which previously housed Gilmore Girls and Dawson's Creek, so I figured it was a good show, but I hadn't ever caught it. I'm really bad about watching new tv shows. I tend to stick to the ones I always watch and will sometimes get into a show after it's been on for a few seasons (CSI, House, Gilmore, Dawson's...). I was "bored" yesterday and hit up the cw website (http://www.cwtv.com/) to check out what all the fuss was about. I watched the Pilot which was free on their site and fell in love with it. Too bad they don't have all the episodes for free on their. They have the pilot and the three most recent episodes. Well, the shows been on since like August or September. I didn't want to jump from the pilot to the last few episodes...seemed like some sort of injustice. So...I investigated and found that I could buy all the episodes from season 1 for $40 on iTunes. I had just received a $50 check for graduation from my aunt so I figured this could be my gift to myself. I've been catching up on the whole season for the last 24 hours. I have a couple more episodes to watch and a new one comes on tv tonight.
I bought Brian a mini pool table today at the BX. It was like a whole dollar, but I think he'll get a kick out of it. I miss him.
