Buried Treasure

This was unearthed in our front yard a couple weeks ago:

I had noticed the bit of handle that was exposed shortly after I moved in almost a year ago, but hadn't really thought much about it. Brian and I were both outside for some reason and I pointed it out to him. I guess curiosity got the best of him and he dug it up. Only a small part of me actually expected a full tool/weapon to come out of the ground.

I like to think that it's some murder weapon. Or I watch too many crime dramas on TV. Brian thinks it accidentally got buried by a big rain storm or something. I like my murder weapon idea better.

Why do you think this was buried in my front yard?

Two little boys in your neighborhood were playing at a neighbors who was outside hammering together a doll house for his little girl. He let the boys play with his hammer and they were getting careless. To teach them a lesson when one swung the hammer he grabbed it, pretend struck himself in the head with it, and fell down.

The boys, panicking, ran around until they came across YOUR house, which had fresh sod. They stuck the hammer under the sod to hide it and never went back to the neighbors and never threw around heavy objects again.

The neighbor still complains about having to buy a new hammer after that.

Dad says that it's a hatchet that was probably left behind by roofers. It doesn't look like it has been buried that long. Were the roofs redone there recently? It would have been used to trim shingles.
You know Dad..he knows tools!
Love you!! M. (and D.)
